Melanoma Symptoms and Signs

What melanoma symptoms and signs should you look for?

Generally speaking normal, benign moles are evenly coloured and less than 6mm across. Once developed they tend to have little change in size, colour and shape.

One of the most useful guides is the ABCDE rule. In addition the following are some other things to watch for that may indicate a change from a normal mole to melanoma.

  • A wound or sore that takes longer than expected to heal.
  • Any new redness or swelling around that has spread past the edge of a mole to the skin that surrounds it.
  • Pigment or colouring that spreads to the surrounding skin.
  • Bleeding or oozing from the surface of a mole without any obvious trauma or injury.
  • An increase in the thickness of the skin around a mole.

A great way to be safe from skin cancer including malignant melanoma is to do a thorough self check of your skin. If you have any concerns or if you notice any changes similar to those above you should see a doctor.

Following that make regular checks of your skin. As you get to know you body better any changes will be more obvious. Using a logging tool like Mole Monitor can help keep record of any checks and serve as a reminder.

If you have any concerns don't hesistate to see a doctor. Don't rely only on your phone alone for diagnosis or advice.
